Everest Classic Trek – 10 days

The Everest Classic Trek, also known as the Jiri to Everest Base Camp Trek, is the original route taken by early mountaineers, including Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay during their historic 1953 Everest expedition. Before the construction of the Lukla airport, this trail was the only gateway to the Khumbu region. Today, it remains a favorite among trekkers who seek authenticity, solitude, and a deeper cultural connection.

Unlike the shorter Lukla route, the Everest Classic Trek begins in Jiri or Salleri, offering a longer and more gradual approach to Everest Base Camp. It allows trekkers to pass through traditional mid-hill villages, lush forests, terraced farmlands, and remote monasteries — providing a rich tapestry of Nepali life and landscapes before reaching the high Himalayas.

The Everest Classic Trek is ideal for those who seek more than just the Everest Base Camp itself. It is a journey through history, culture, and untouched landscapes, offering one of the most rewarding trekking experiences in Nepal.

What to Expect on the Trek

The journey begins with a thrilling mountain flight from Kathmandu to Lukla (2,860m), followed by moderate hikes through pine forests, rhododendron-filled trails, and traditional Sherpa villages. Trekkers gradually ascend to Namche Bazaar (3,440m) — the gateway to Everest and the cultural hub of the Khumbu.

From Namche, trekkers hike to viewpoints like Hotel Everest View (3,880m), one of the highest luxury hotels in the world, offering unmatched panoramas of Everest, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, Thamserku, and Kongde Ri.

Best Time to Trek: Spring (March–May) and Autumn (October–November) are ideal for clear skies and cultural festivals like Mani Rimdu.

Why This Trek?

  • Authentic Cultural Experience: Begin your trek from Salleri or Jiri, away from the crowds of Lukla. You’ll walk through less-touristed villages, terraced farmlands, and dense rhododendron forests, experiencing the culture of the Rai and Sherpa communities firsthand.

  • Gradual Altitude Gain: The longer route allows for better acclimatization, reducing the risk of altitude sickness and making the high-altitude portion of the trek safer and more enjoyable.

  • Scenic Diversity: Unlike the shorter Lukla-based treks, the Classic route traverses a wide variety of landscapes — from lush green hills to alpine terrain, with panoramic views of Everest (8,848m), Lhotse, Nuptse, Ama Dablam, and many more.

  • Spiritual Landmarks: The trail passes through ancient monasteries, including the iconic Tengboche Monastery, and offers spiritual encounters rooted in Tibetan Buddhism.

  • Less Crowded Path: Fewer trekkers choose this longer route, making it a perfect option for those who want a peaceful and more personal trekking experience.

The Trekking Trail

The Everest Classic Trekking Trail offers a scenic and culturally immersive journey to the base of the world’s highest peak, following the original route taken by early mountaineers before flights to Lukla became common. Starting with a drive from Kathmandu to Salleri, the trail gradually ascends through the lush hills and terraced farmlands of the Solu region, passing through traditional Sherpa villages like Nunthala, Bupsa, and Surke.

As trekkers move higher into the Khumbu region, they encounter dense forests, suspension bridges over the Dudh Koshi River, and stunning mountain views of Everest, Lhotse, and Ama Dablam. The trail leads through iconic stops such as Phakding, Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, Dingboche, and Lobuche before reaching Everest Base Camp at 5,364 meters.

Along the way, the trek features cultural highlights like ancient monasteries, prayer wheels, and chortens, making it a perfect blend of natural beauty and Sherpa heritage. This classic route is ideal for trekkers seeking a longer, quieter alternative to the Lukla fly-in route, offering a truly authentic Himalayan experience.

Sagarmatha National Park

Everest Base Camp sits within the heart of Sagarmatha National Park, a protected area that has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979. This prestigious status was granted due to several key factors:

  • Exceptionally rich high-altitude ecosystems

  • Iconic, snow-capped Himalayan peaks, including Mount Everest

  • Deep spiritual and cultural significance to the Sherpa people

Moreover, this region offers not only breathtaking natural beauty but also a profound connection to tradition, biodiversity, and the awe-inspiring power of the Himalayas. Together, these elements make Sagarmatha National Park one of the most extraordinary destinations on Earth.

With experienced guides ensuring safety and comfort, the Everest Classic Trek provides an authentic and peaceful journey to Everest Base Camp.

Upon your arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, you will be transferred to your hotel for check-in and some rest. In the evening, there will be an orientation meeting with your guide and fellow trekkers to discuss the trek and ensure all preparations are in place.
After breakfast, you will spend the morning preparing for your trek, finalizing gear, and obtaining necessary permits. Return to your hotel in the evening for rest.

An early morning drive will take you from Kathmandu to Salleri, a small village in the Solu-Khumbu region. The 8-9 hour drive offers stunning views of the Nepali countryside and the Himalayan foothills. Upon arrival in Salleri, you'll check into your lodge for an overnight stay.

After breakfast, you'll begin your trek with a 6-7 hour walk through dense forests, passing traditional Sherpa villages and terraced farmlands. The route offers beautiful views of the surrounding hills. You will spend the night in Nunthala, a small, peaceful village nestled among the hills.

Today’s trek lasts 5-6 hours, with a steady climb through forests and rural villages. The trek gives you a chance to experience the rural lifestyle of the Solu-Khumbu region while offering glimpses of the snow-capped peaks in the distance. Upon reaching Bupsa, you will stay in a local lodge for the night.

This day’s trek will take around 5-6 hours, leading you through lush forests and small Sherpa settlements. As you ascend, you'll enjoy breathtaking views of Everest and other towering peaks. By late afternoon, you'll arrive in Chaurikharka, a small village at 2,650 meters, where you'll spend the night in a comfortable lodge.
On Day 7, you will trek for 4-5 hours, descending into the valley before climbing steadily towards Monjo, a village near the entrance of Sagarmatha National Park. The route passes through dense forests and traditional Sherpa villages, with views of the majestic mountains. You will spend the night in Monjo.
The trek from Monjo to Namche Bazaar takes 3-4 hours. The trail ascends steadily through pine forests and offers great views of Mount Everest, Lhotse, and other peaks. Namche Bazaar, known as the gateway to Everest, is a vibrant Sherpa town with many shops, cafes, and a market. You will stay here for a day to acclimatize.

A full day of rest in Namche Bazaar allows your body to adjust to the altitude. You can explore the town, visit the Sherpa Museum, or take short walks around the area, such as a hike to the Everest View Hotel for a stunning panoramic view of Everest and surrounding peaks.

On Day 10, you will trek for 5-6 hours to reach Tengboche, which is famous for its Buddhist monastery. Spend another day in Dingboche to adjust to the high altitude. You can explore the area or take a short hike to a nearby hill for better views of the surrounding mountains, such as Makalu and Ama Dablam.

Today’s trek takes around 5-6 hours, bringing you to Lobuche, a small village located near the base of Lobuche Peak. The trail climbs steadily through rugged terrain, and you will pass glaciers and moraines along the way. This is a significant altitude gain, so it's essential to rest and hydrate.

After checking into the lodge, you’ll head to Everest Base Camp for a once-in-a-lifetime experience at the foot of the world’s highest peak.
