Upper Dolpo Trek – 25 Days

The Upper Dolpo Trek is a once-in-a-lifetime adventure that takes you deep into one of Nepal’s most isolated and spiritually preserved regions. Nestled between the Dhaulagiri range and the Tibetan Plateau, Upper Dolpo is often described as the last enclave of untouched Tibetan culture. Here, life remains unchanged for centuries—free from modernization, steeped in spirituality, and deeply connected to nature.

Upper Dolpo trek is more than just a physically demanding route through remote wilderness—it’s a spiritual and cultural time capsule. Not only will you cross high-altitude passes and explore ancient monasteries, but you’ll also walk through traditional villages where time seems to stand still. As you journey deeper, you’ll gain meaningful insight into the world of the Dolpo-pa—the local people whose resilience, customs, and spiritual devotion are both humbling and inspiring.

Often called the jewel of Dolpo, this stunning turquoise alpine lake is framed by dramatic cliffs and untouched natural beauty. Moreover, it holds deep spiritual significance for the local people. Just above the lake lies Shey Phoksundo Monastery, a peaceful sanctuary that exudes timeless serenity.

Equally important is Shey Gompa, an 800-year-old monastery regarded as the spiritual heart of Dolpo. Nestled at the base of Crystal Mountain, it attracts pilgrims from across the region. These devotees perform a sacred clockwise ritual called kora, believed to purify the soul and bring inner peace.

Remote Villages: Saldang & Dho Tarap

These villages showcase classic Tibetan architecture and offer an authentic glimpse into yak herding, barley farming, and Bon-Buddhist rituals. The villagers’ warm hospitality and deeply spiritual lifestyle leave a lasting impression.

High Himalayan Passes

Trekkers will challenge themselves by crossing rugged high passes like:

  • Kang La (5,360m)
  • Jeng La (5,110m)
  • Sela La

Each pass offers panoramic views and unforgettable trekking moments.

Upper Dolpo Trek is one of the few places on Earth where the Bon religion, which predates Tibetan Buddhism, is still practiced. As you trek, you’ll encounter prayer wheels, chortens, and monks chanting ancient mantras that echo through the mountains.

During summer, caravans of yaks and mules transport salt and grains across borders, a living reminder of the historic Trans-Himalayan trade routes.

This trek also journeys through Nepal’s largest national park, home to:

  • Snow leopards
  • Blue sheep (bharal)
  • Musk deer
  • Himalayan black bear
  • Golden eagles and Himalayan griffons

As part of the Sacred Himalayan Landscape, Upper Dolpo plays a crucial role in ecological and cultural conservation.

Due to its remote and sensitive nature, Upper Dolpo is a restricted area. Trekking here requires:

  • Upper Dolpo Restricted Area Permit: USD 500 for 10 days + USD 50/day after
  • Lower Dolpo Permit: USD 20/week
  • Shey Phoksundo National Park Entry Permit
  • TIMS Card (Trekkers’ Information Management System)
Note: A minimum of 2 trekkers with a licensed Nepali guide is required.

To begin your journey, you’ll take two flights:

  • Kathmandu ➝ Nepalgunj: Approximately 1 hour

  • Nepalgunj ➝ Juphal: Around 40–45 minutes

Tip: Weather conditions in Juphal can be unpredictable. Therefore, it’s wise to include buffer days in your itinerary to avoid any delays.

The ideal time to trek Upper Dolpo is from late May to mid-October. Since Dolpo lies in the rain shadow of the Himalayas, it experiences minimal monsoon rain, making summer treks not only possible but also enjoyable.

However, it’s best to avoid trekking from November to April, as heavy snowfall blocks the high passes and many villages become deserted during this period.

Because there are no lodges beyond the lower villages, camping is mandatory throughout most of the trek.

  • Accommodation: Tented camps equipped with sleeping bags and foam mattresses

  • Food: Traditional meals such as dal bhat, tsampa (barley flour), Tibetan bread, dried yak meat, lentils, and potatoes. Hot tea and soups are essential staples to keep you warm at high altitudes.

All food and drinking water (which is either filtered or boiled) are provided by your support crew.

The Upper Dolpo Trek isn’t your typical Himalayan adventure. Instead, it offers a bold journey through raw wilderness, ancient sacred traditions, and breathtaking remote beauty. While you won’t encounter luxury along the way, you will discover authenticity, profound solitude, and a spiritual depth that’s truly one of a kind.

For experienced trekkers seeking a destination far removed from the usual routes—where silence speaks louder than technology and ancient traditions continue to shape daily life—Upper Dolpo offers not just a trek, but a life-changing journey into another world.
