Sikles Trek – 6 Days

The Sikles Trek is a culturally rich and naturally stunning route nestled in the lesser-explored valleys of the Annapurna Conservation Area, northeast of Pokhara. Unlike more commercialized trekking routes, this trail remains peaceful and relatively untouched, offering a refreshing alternative to crowded paths.

Moreover, the trek showcases panoramic views of snow-capped Himalayan peaks such as Annapurna II and Lamjung Himal. As you walk, you’ll pass through vibrant rhododendron forests, charming stone-paved Gurung villages, and beautifully terraced farmland that changes with the seasons.

In addition, the cultural immersion is a major highlight. The Sikles region is home to one of the largest Gurung settlements in Nepal. Consequently, trekkers have the unique opportunity to experience local traditions, observe ancient lifestyles, and enjoy warm hospitality. For instance, you may witness traditional dances, enjoy homemade delicacies like sel roti and gundruk, or even take part in local festivals if your timing is right.

Furthermore, the trek’s moderate elevation and shorter duration make it accessible to a wide range of travelers. Therefore, it is ideal for families, student groups, photographers, nature lovers, and those with limited time. Because ofthe lower risk of altitude sickness, even beginner trekkers can enjoy this journey comfortably.

Although the trek doesn’t reach extreme altitudes, it still offers dramatic mountain vistas and diverse biodiversity. Bird watchers, in particular, will appreciate the variety of avian species found along the trail. Likewise, the forests are home to animals like barking deer, langur monkeys, and even occasional sightings of leopard tracks.

Ultimately, the Sikles Trek provides a perfect blend of natural beauty, cultural richness, and peaceful walking trails. Whether you’re seeking a short escape from city life or a meaningful connection with rural Nepalese culture, this trek delivers an unforgettable experience.z

Throughout the trek, trekkers enjoy breathtaking vistas of:

  • Annapurna II (7,937m)
  • Annapurna IV (7,525m)
  • Lamjung Himal (6,983m)
  • Machapuchare (Fishtail, 6,993m) — sacred to the local Gurung people and unclimbed due to religious beliefs

The trail traverses through varying altitudes and landscapes:

  • Lush subtropical forests
  • Expansive alpine meadows
  • Stepped agricultural fields
  • Suspension bridges and river crossings

In spring (March–May), the region becomes a floral paradise with blooming rhododendrons, orchids, and wildflowers. Autumn (September–November) offers crystal-clear views and golden harvest scenes across the terraced hills.

Being part of the Annapurna Conservation Area, the Sikles region is home to a wide array of flora and fauna:

  • Birds: Himalayan monal (Nepal’s national bird), kalij pheasant, eagles, vultures, cuckoos, and parakeets
  • Mammals: Barking deer, Himalayan langur, civets, wild boars, and occasionally leopards in remote areas
  • Botanical Richness: Medicinal plants like yarshagumba and more than 1,200 species of flowering plants

Sikles Trek is one of the oldest and largest Gurung settlements in Nepal. It sits on a plateau at around 1,980 meters and is surrounded by hills and forested ridges. The Gurung people, originally Tibetan in origin, follow a unique blend of Buddhist, Bon, and shamanistic practices.

Key cultural experiences in Sikles:

  • Local festivals such as Tamu Lhosar, Ghatu, and Sorathi dances
  • Gurung Museum featuring traditional weapons, clothing, and household items
  • Traditional stone-roofed houses and paved walkways
  • Opportunity to participate in local farming, spinning wool, or cooking
  • Meeting ex-Gurkhas who served in British or Indian armies
