Lumbini, located in the southern plains of Nepal, holds deep spiritual and historical significance. Recognized globally as the birthplace of Lord Buddha, it attracts thousands of pilgrims, historians, and travelers every year. They come to connect with the roots of Buddhism and to experience the calm, sacred atmosphere that surrounds this timeless destination.
Lumbini is revered as the birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama, who later became Buddha—the Enlightened One and founder of Buddhism. According to tradition, Queen Maya Devi gave birth to him here over 2,500 years ago. This sacred event makes Lumbini one of the oldest and most important pilgrimage sites in Asia.

The sacred Maya Devi Temple marks the exact birthplace of Buddha. Archaeologists carefully preserve and study this highly revered site.

Inside the temple complex, Queen Maya is believed to have bathed in the Puskarini Sacred Pondbefore giving birth. Ancient ruins surround the temple and offer a fascinating glimpse into the region’s rich and enduring religious history.

In 1997, Lumbini was officially designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site recognizing its exceptional cultural and historical significance. The site protects and preserves various archaeological remains dating back to the 3rd century BCE, including the Ashoka Pillar.

Emperor Ashoka, one of India’s greatest rulers and a devout Buddhist, visited Lumbini in 249 BCE and erected this pillar bearing inscriptions commemorating Buddha’s birthplace and the king’s commitment to peace and Buddhism.

UNESCO’s recognition has helped safeguard Lumbini’s sanctity, promote international cooperation for its conservation, and boost sustainable tourism in the region.

This sacred flame is not just a fire, it is a living symbol of light, love, and liberation, glowing at the very place where one of the greatest spiritual teachers in human history was born.

Positioned near the Lumbini World Peace Pagoda and Maya Devi Temple, the flame continues to burn as a tribute to Buddha’s legacy. Pilgrims light butter lamps near it, offering prayers for world peace, personal healing, and spiritual awakening.

Spiritual Importance of Lumbini
